Do you Know Merritt Island?
Merritt Island or Peninsula?
Did you know Merritt Island was originally an island separated from the mainland to the west and south by the Indian River Lagoon and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The east side of Merritt Island splits and is divided by Sykes Creek and New Found Harbor. They. in turn. are separated from Cocoa Beach by the Banana River Lagoon. But in the 1960s Merritt Island was connected to the mainland by NASA's construction of the crawlerway to Launch Complex 39 over the Banana River in the north. Launch complex 39 was previously used for launches of the Saturn V rocket for the Project Apollo moon missions and have since been remodeled for the needs of the Space Shuttle.
